THE ORIGIN STORY

HOW I GOT HERE

A lifelong love letter to movies, music, books, and the stories that stay with us.

CHAPTER 01 — THE COMPANY I KEPT

Growing up an only child, it’s safe to say I learned a good chunk of what I know from movies and TV. The escapism a movie could bring kept me company when I was lonely. My parents made sure I was social too, and luckily my best friend and I bonded over movies together.

CHAPTER 02 — THE FAMILY LIBRARY

My mom was an English major, and my real name—Blake—comes from her favorite poet, William Blake. I grew up watching classic horror with her, from The Bad Seed to Alfred Hitchcock, while almost always seeing a book in her hand. My best friend’s mom and mine were in a book club together, and they taught me early that “smart people read.” Between stories, movies, and that shared love of learning, I was steeped in it from the start. My first movie was The Wizard of Oz, followed by The Bad Seed—quite the opposite double feature, but one that truly cultivated the tastes I still have today.

CHAPTER 03 — CURTAIN UP

Because I begged them, my parents enrolled me in dance and voice lessons. Musicals and theatre became my first passion, and I eventually went to college in Hollywood to study musical theatre. Strangely, that’s where I really fell back into movies: after endless nights of rehearsal and belting my guts out, there was nothing better than going back to the dorm, not speaking to a soul, and escaping into a good movie.

CHAPTER 04 — LIFE’S CO-STAR

Quoting movies is something I’ve always done. Thanks to theatre, I met my partner in life—someone who loves acting, singing, and dancing as much as I do, and who can out-quote me in just about any movie.

CHAPTER 05 — THE COMMUNITY

Being online has given me one place to share my love for film, books, storytelling, and my gift of gab. Come for the recommendations, stay for our common love of film—I hope to keep this community going.
